Tout a commencé par les créations de Cécile, Manon et Marie. Marie teint, découpe et assemble, Manon imagine, coud et peaufine, Cécile conçoit, modèle et façonne. Toutes trois changent la donne dans les domaines de la lingerie et du vêtement porté, tant dans la délicate dentelle de Manon aux inspirations florales, comme dans les précieux tissus colorés naturellement de Marie que dans les boucles des ceintures de Cécile à la pâte de bronze et aux formes organiques.
Il y a (à peu près) mille et une combinaisons possibles lorsque l’on associe un body, un tissu et une ceinture. Le body, c’est la toile de fond, le tissu, la fluidité, la ceinture, l’encadrement. J’ai donc fait une rapide association et j’ai conclu qu’il fallait vraiment qu’on travaille ensemble.

It all started with what Cécile, Manon and Marie make. Marie dyes, cuts and patches fabrics, Manon imagines, sews and puts the finishing touches on her lingerie, Cécile conceives, models and shapes belts.
The three of them bring beautiful and amazing changes concerning lingerie and clothing: in Manon’s delicate lace inspired by nature, or in Marie’s natural dyed fabrics and Cécile organic shaped belt buckles.
When we associate a body, a fabric and a belt, there are (roughly) a thousands possible clothing combinations. The body is the background, the fabric is the fluidity, the belt is the frame. So, I’ve quickly connected these three elements and their makers together and hit upon this: we should work as soon as possible.
En imaginant les tenues portées, j’avais en tête des figures mythiques : Athena, Leto, Artemis, et tous ces magnifiques drapés façonnés dans ces statues de déités aux histoires complexes, mais aux caractères toujours francs. Et tout d’un coup, le roman d’Hemingway Le Jardin d’Eden m’est venu en tête, et plus particulièrement le personnage de Catherine Bourne. Et vous allez comprendre pourquoi.

When I imagined the different outfits, I had in mind mythological figures: Athena, Leto, Artemis, and all these beautiful drapery cast on these deities statues of complex stories but bold personalities. Suddenly, Hemingway’s Garden of Eden came to my mind. Particularly, the character of Catherine Bourne. And here’s why:
La sensualité et le soleil sont les deux points cardinaux de ce roman. Le lecteur n’a d’autre choix que d’adopter le point de vue de David Bourne, romancier à succès dont la femme, Catherine est décrite comme jalouse. Catherine, adoptera, au fil des pages, un caractère dominant, tant dans sa propre affirmation que dans sa relation avec Marita, une jeune femme dont le couple va tomber amoureux.
J’ai lu beaucoup d’analyses à propos de cette oeuvre, mais je n’arrive pas à oublier comment David appelle sa femme : “Démon”. Catherine prend des initiatives, parfois elle s’impose, certes, et lance des remarques salées à son mari. Elle blesse également. Mais sans elle, il n’y a aucune histoire.
Retrouver ce schéma d’une femme prenant (bien-sûr), trop de place, et d’un mari jouissant de ses interventions tout en la traitant de vile créature est plutôt (très) fatigant.

The novel is a cocktail of sun and sensuality. The reader has to adopt the point of view of David Bourne, a successful writer whose wife, Catherine, is said to be jealous. Throughout the pages, Catherine will evolve and become a dominant character. It is shown both in how she asserts herself with her husband and in her relationship with Marita, a young woman who becomes the love interest of the couple.
I’ve read a lot of articles about this literary piece, but I can’t forget how David calls his wife: “Devil”. Catherine takes the bull by the horns, gains control and sometimes makes barbed comments on her husband and hurts him with her words. However, without her, there’s no story.
Finding again this scenario of a woman taking (of course) too much initiative and room, while her husband both enjoys it and insults her as a vile creature is (really) boring.
Dans ma recherche d’une histoire à raconter, j’ai pensé que Catherine, tout comme les figures féminines qui lui font écho, est d’abord et avant tout une femme qui fait preuve de force et d’intelligence. Il y a, en effet, beaucoup de qualité dans ces défauts.
Alors, avec les créations de Cécile, Manon et Marie, j’ai souhaité fabriquer les tenues d’une femme, Catherine, Athena ou tout autre personnalité illustrant la puissance et la force que l’on retrouve chez ces figures diabolisées.

In my search of a story to tell, I thought that Catherine, as the many female figures that echo her, is, first and foremost a woman who shows how strong and smart she is. Many qualities are reflected on her flaws. So, with the pieces of clothing made by Cécile, Manon and Marie, I wanted to create outfits for a woman, Catherine, Athena or any other personality illustrating the power and the attributes of these devilish figures.
Le choix de la modèle fut unique : il s’agit de Laetitia Kitegi. Photographe et modèle, je savais que Laetitia comprendrait cette histoire. Sa capacité à capturer des instants sur le vif se retrouve dans son agilité à exécuter des gestes parfaits. Pas seulement à prendre la pose, mais à incarner et me donner la possibilité de capter le beau et les nuances de cette série.

It took me less than a second to choose the model: Laetitia Kitegi. As she is a photographer and a model, I knew she’d understand the story. Her ability to catch moments from life corresponds to how she demonstrates her poise, elegance and she embraces the character. Not only to strike the pose, but to become someone else and giving me the possibility to seize beautiful instants and all the nuances of this photoshoot.
“Not your devil” est une série de photographies impliquant cinq femmes, réunies le temps d’une matinée pour parler de Catherine Bourne, mais aussi de tous ces stéréotypes sur les femmes dans la fiction, qui ont un mauvais rôle et sans qui l’histoire ne serait rien. C’est également un hommage à la création textile et aux artisanes qui se consacrent à la mode slow.

“Not your devil” is a series of photographs which involves five women, gathered in a morning to talk about Catherine Bourne, but also about the stereotypes that exist against women in fiction, who are the “villain” but without whom the story would be nothing. It is also a celebration of fashion design and a tribute to craftswomen who dedicate their works to slow fashion.
